Freezing Weather Tips

Freezing Weather Tips

Hey, Texans! A Freeze is Coming – Let’s Get Ready Together!

Freezing temps are rare here, but with a little preparation, we can keep our homes safe and cozy. Here’s your easy checklist:

1. Protect Your Pipes and Water Heater

  • Drip your faucets: Both hot and cold water lines need a slow drip.
  • Open under-sink cabinets: Let warm air flow around your pipes.
  • Leave the attic door slightly open: This allows warm air from your home to reach your water heater and pipes in the attic, preventing bursts.

2. Stay Off the Roads

  • Avoid driving unless absolutely necessary—especially overpasses and bridges. These freeze first and can be dangerous.
  • If you must drive, take it slow and keep an emergency kit in your car.

3. Seal Out the Cold

  • Use towels, blankets, or weatherstripping to block drafts under doors and windows.

4. Prepare for Power Outages

  • Charge all your devices and power banks.
  • Stock up on flashlights, batteries, and cozy blankets.
  • Fill your tub with water (to flush toilets or clean if needed).

5. Cozy Up at Home

  • This is the perfect excuse to binge-watch your favorite series, play board games, or catch up on that book you’ve been meaning to finish.

6. Bring Pets Inside

  • Don’t forget your furry friends—they need to stay warm too!

7. Be Heater-Safe

  • Never use your oven to heat your home.
  • Keep space heaters at least 3 feet away from anything flammable and turn them off when unattended.

8. Check on Neighbors

  • A quick call to an elderly neighbor or someone without reliable heat could make a big difference.

Stay warm, stay safe, and let’s make the most of this freeze, Texas-style! We’re all in this together!
